8 interaction design and usability sites

I’ve been reading a lot of interaction design and usability sites recently and checking out a few podcasts. The list below is some of the resources I’ve found particularly useful. There’ll be no surprises for the seasoned usability pros but if you’re just getting stuck in hopefully you’ll find them useful.

Which usability sites do you use? Post a comment with your favourites.

1. IxDA: the Interaction Design Association

“IxDA is the Interaction Design Association, a network dedicated to the professional practice of Interaction Design”

IxDA describes itself as an “un-organisation”: to become a member you just sign up on the site. There’s an active community that discusses all issues relating to interaction design and some of the big names hang out there. Members are responsive to questions and it’s a good place to explore a number of usability topics.

2. Usability News

Usablity News is a round-up of the latest usability news stories from around the Web and beyond. It’s produced by Interaction, a specialist HCI group of the British Computer Society (BCS).

3. Boxes and Arrows

Boxes and Arrows is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the “practice, innovation and discussion of design; including graphic design, interaction design, information architecture and the design of business”. They also produce a podcast.

4. UX Matters

UX Matters is a web magazine producing articles in the area of, well, user experience. It also aims to be, “the premier source of information and inspiration for UX professionals.”

5. User Interface Engineering

User Interface Engineering (UIE) is a research, training and consulting firm, headed up by Jared Spool. The site has a blog, UIE Brainsparks and an associated podcast.

6. Think Vitamin

Think Vitamin is published by Carsonified and focuses on all matters Website-related. As well as some generally interesting articles, there’s a section on user experience and user interface design.

7. Boagworld podcast

The Boagworld podcast, presented by Paul Boag and Marcus Lillington of Headscape is a general web-related podcast which often touches on usability and user experience matters. Pretty light-hearted, but it also features interviews with leading figures in the Web world. All episodes are also transcribed and annotated with useful links.

There are also associated Twitter feeds: from Paul (@boagworld) and Marcus (@marcus67) themselves and a useful links feed (@BoagLinks).

8. UXPod

The UXPod podcast is presented by Gerry Gaffney of Information and Design, a Melbourne-based usability consultancy which features some interesting interviews. Just don’t be put off by the typos on the UXPod web page: “commentatory” and “avaialble”?
