Nice Flickr search thing

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Don’t know how recent this is, but I only stumbled across it the other day: Flickr’s search results page.

I really like this: a search on a key word (e.g. “Shetland” in the example below) brings up a results page with a gallery of images which can be displayed with increasing levels of detail (small, medium, detail, slideshow) and, to the right, related groups, photographers, tag clusters and places. Clicking on “Lerwick” in the right-hand column takes you to another screen with a detail image over an image carousel: you can either scroll the large image or browse the carousel.

It’s not just the layout and UI design I like about this, it’s the way that various constituent parts of Flickr (individual photographers, photos and groups) are all drawn together and consequently draw you in.

As an aside, I also notice that my photo of the Breckon is now being used as the icon for the Shetland group which is quite nice.

Fun with Animoto

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Yesterday I had fun creating a video slideshow with Animoto. It’s turned out quite well I think, which I hasten to emphasise is due in large part to Animoto rather than any clever video editing on my part.

The only problem I’m having with it is setting a title frame. I uploaded it to YouTube which will do this automatically for you but the quality’s not too good. I tried adding one myself in Flash but failed miserably, showing unfortunately my rather limited grasp of Flash. If anyone can give me any pointers on this I’d be grateful to hear more.

I’ve also uploaded it to Flickr which was quite exciting, as it’s the first time I’ve used the video upload functionality. Again, I’m stuck with a rather dull black screen for a title which isn’t exactly inviting but at least it will display some basic authoring details.

Anyway, here it is: my Animoto video slide show of my Lofotens photos. I’ve used a track I like off the last Explosions in the Sky album (”It’s Natural to be Afraid” from All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone) as the background music. I’m probably not meant to do this so am happy to remove it if required.

I’ve just uploaded the remaining decent photos from my trip to Norway to Flickr.

The photo shown here was taken on our last day on Lofoten, doing a short walk from Ytresand to Mulstøa and back. A beautiful day and a beautiful view.
